Like a lot of household clutter amassed over the years, it sat in the spare room collecting dust.

Slightly cracked and stained, the Chinese vase was used to store a few old umbrellas.
But 50 years after they were given it as a present, its owners found the vase was worth £500,000 - more than the value of their house.

Auctioneer Matthew Denney saw past a crack it had in the porcelain and the fact it had been splashed with emulsion paint.

Further research showed the blue and white piece found in the Purbeck area of Dorset was an imperial vase and almost certainly made for the Emperor Qianlong in about 1740.

Although it is thought it could be worth as much as £500,000, its value could have been double that price had it not been damaged.

The find is identical to a plot from the TV series Lovejoy, in which the hero spotted a similarly valuable Chinese vase being used by an old lady as an umbrella stand.

Guy Schwinge, from Dukes auction house in Dorchester, said the couple had been given the vase as a present and when it is sold it could change their lives.

'The vendors had owned it for 50 years but had no idea what it was. They had relegated to a spare bedroom with other items of furniture.

'My colleague Matthew Denny spotted it during a routine valuation. There is evidence that it had been used as an umbrella stand and it does have a crack in it and has been splashed with paint.

'In perfect condition it would be worth a great deal more. There is also a possibility that it once belonged to the family of Florence Nightingale.'

Mr Schwinge said: 'This vase exemplifies the best porcelain of the period.

The artwork on the vase shows a landscape of mountains with trees and a house and is thought to be unique.

The production of porcelain in China entered a golden period during the reign of the Emperor Qianlong.

Under his patronage, porcelain production reached heights of refinement and creativity never to be surpassed.

It is not known when the vase came to Britain, but it has been connected with Embley Court in Hampshire, where Florence Nightingale's family lived.

Mr Schwinge said: 'The quality of the landscape painting on the vase is outstanding.

'Successful firing of underglaze blue and red on one object required the highest level of technical mastery.

'Different firing conditions are necessary and it is a process fraught with difficulties.

'For this reason it is a combination of colours usually reserved only for the finest imperial wares.

'The quality of the painting on the vase is of the highest order.

'Stylistically it is reminiscent of the work of Wang Hui, who produced a series of 12 monumental scrolls depicting the Kangxi Emperor's Southern Inspection Tour of 1689.

'The form of the vase is that of a Chinese lantern, a style characteristic of wares from the reign of Yongzheng and the early part of the reign of Qianlong.

'This vase balances elegance of form, outstanding decoration and technical prowess, which are all characteristics of the great period of innovation in porcelain manufacture under the legendary kiln supervisor, Tang Ying.

'He was so highly regarded by the Emperor that in 1743 he was commanded to compile an illustrated book on porcelain manufacture, which is an invaluable reference for scholars.'

One of the most important dealers in Chinese ceramics is Marchants in London.
Stuart Marchant said: 'This is an exceptional discovery of considerable importance.

'The landscape painting is very fine, but it is more usual to find it on Kangxi wares.'

The Chinese market is extremely strong at the moment and there is sure to be a great deal of interest when it goes under the hammer.

The successful bidder will almost certainly need an export licence if he wants to take it out of the country.

It will be auctioned at Duke's on February 11.
